What you'll study

This programme combines theoretical and applied modules to explore the nexus between finance and politics at national and global scales. Core teaching typically covers the political economy of finance, international financial institutions and governance, financial regulation and stability, and the geopolitics of monetary and fiscal policy. Students also study quantitative and qualitative research methods tailored to political and financial data, and examine contemporary topics such as sovereign debt, capital flows, regulatory change, sanctions and the politics of financial crises.

The course is structured around a mix of lectures, seminar discussions, case studies and practical workshops. Assessment methods include essays, policy briefs, data-driven reports, presentations and a substantial independent dissertation or research project that applies theoretical and empirical tools to a chosen issue in international financial and political relations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have an undergraduate degree at a good honours level in a relevant subject such as politics, international relations, economics, finance, sociology or a closely related discipline. Candidates with a lower-class degree may be considered if they can demonstrate substantial relevant professional experience or prior study that shows capacity for postgraduate work.

International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements for postgraduate study; evidence of academic readiness and the ability to engage with quantitative and qualitative material is also important. Admissions may take into account personal statements, references and any relevant work experience in policy, finance or research.

Graduates leave prepared for a range of careers that require understanding of both financial systems and political constraints. Common pathways include policy and analysis roles in government departments, central banks and regulatory bodies; positions in international organisations and development banks; advisory and risk roles in financial institutions; consultancy on geopolitical and regulatory issues; and research or advocacy posts in think tanks, NGOs and political organisations. The programme also provides a foundation for further academic research at doctoral level.
