What you'll study

The PhD is structured around a substantial programme of original research supervised by one or more academic staff. Rather than taught coursework, study centres on developing a research question, conducting rigorous methodology-appropriate investigation, and producing a thesis that makes a significant contribution to knowledge in your field.

• Research proposal and planning — refinement of research questions, literature review, and development of a feasible research plan and ethics approvals where required.
• Methodology and methods — advanced training in qualitative, quantitative, computational or mixed methods as relevant to the discipline, including laboratory, fieldwork, archival or design-based methods.
• Data collection and analysis — sustained empirical, theoretical or creative work leading to novel findings or conceptual developments.
• Thesis preparation — drafting, revising and finalising a written thesis (or thesis by publication where permitted) that meets doctoral standards for originality and scholarship.
• Examination and dissemination — thesis examination by external and internal examiners, and dissemination of results through conferences, journal articles, or public engagement.

Entry requirements

Admission to the PhD normally requires a completed research master’s degree or an equivalent qualification with a substantial research component and a demonstrated capacity for independent research. Applicants must submit a research proposal, academic transcripts, a curriculum vitae, and references. International applicants will also need to meet Massey University’s English language requirements.

Selection also depends on the availability of suitable supervision and resources; potential candidates are encouraged to contact academic staff in their proposed area of study to discuss research fit before applying. Candidates without a research master’s but with strong professional experience or publications may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
