What you'll study

The Master of Veterinary Studies (PMVTT) combines advanced clinical teaching, applied research methods and professional development. Study typically includes advanced modules in areas such as diagnostic imaging, surgery, internal medicine, anaesthesia, clinical pathology and herd or population health. Students also learn applied epidemiology, evidence-based medicine and advanced diagnostic decision-making.

The programme is delivered through a mix of taught coursework, supervised clinical rotations or placements in the Massey Veterinary Teaching Hospital and an independent research or professional project. Assessment commonly includes case reports, clinical logbooks, written assignments, presentations and a thesis or capstone project focused on a real-world clinical, teaching or practice-management problem.

Entry requirements

• Primary degree in veterinary science (BVSc, DVM or equivalent) from a recognised institution.
• Registration or eligibility for registration to practise veterinary medicine in the applicant's home jurisdiction; some pathways accept provisional registration subject to additional conditions.
• Relevant clinical experience is normally expected; many successful applicants have at least some years of professional practice or internship experience.
• Academic transcripts, a curriculum vitae, a statement of academic and professional intent, and referees who can comment on clinical ability and suitability for advanced study.
• International applicants will be required to meet the University’s English language proficiency requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates move into advanced clinical roles in referral and specialist practices, leadership positions in mixed and production-animal practice, and senior clinical appointments in companion-animal practice. The programme is also a recognised pathway into academic careers — including teaching and clinical research — and roles in government biosecurity, public and animal health agencies, and veterinary pharmaceutical or diagnostic industries.
