What you'll study

The Bachelor of Nursing at Massey is a three-year, professional undergraduate degree that combines foundational biomedical and social science knowledge with progressive clinical practice. Early study covers anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, health assessment and basic nursing practice. Subsequent years broaden into mental health nursing, Māori and Pacific health, public and primary health care, long-term and palliative care, leadership and professional practice, and research methods for evidence-based care.

Students undertake structured clinical placements across hospitals, primary care and community settings, supported by simulation laboratories and interprofessional learning. Coursework emphasises culturally safe practice, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, health promotion and the application of theory to real-world patient care.

Entry requirements

Applicants must satisfy Massey University's undergraduate admission criteria and the specific requirements for entry to nursing. Typical requirements include successful completion of secondary school qualification or recognised tertiary study, and evidence of literacy and numeracy competence. A background in biology or health-related subjects is advantageous.

Before clinical placements, students are required to meet professional suitability checks such as police and background checks, immunisation and health clearances, and any placement-related compliance (for example first aid or infection-control training). International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency in line with university policy.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a nurse with the national regulatory authority and commonly take roles in acute hospital wards, emergency departments, primary care clinics, community health, aged residential care, mental health services and public health programmes. Graduates also move into specialist nursing roles, nursing management, education and clinical research after gaining experience and further qualifications.

Many graduates progress to postgraduate study in clinical specialties (for example midwifery, mental health or critical care), advanced practice pathways, health leadership, policy or postgraduate research degrees.
