What you'll study

The BA in Linguistics combines core theoretical courses with applied and methodological training. Students study how languages are structured and processed, and how they vary across communities and contexts, with opportunities to apply that knowledge to real-world problems.

• Foundations: introductory courses in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics that build the formal tools for analysing language.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent qualification. Admission decisions take into account academic transcripts and the strength of the applicant's preparation in language-related subjects where relevant.

• Applicants whose prior education was not in English may be required to demonstrate English proficiency through a recognised test or an internal placement assessment.
• Because the programme addresses Arabic linguistics and the multilingual context of the UAE, applicants with prior study or proficiency in Arabic may be particularly well prepared, though Arabic proficiency is not always mandatory for admission.
• International applicants should meet the university's general admission criteria for international students and provide certified copies of their academic credentials.
• Some applicants may be asked to attend an interview or submit a personal statement outlining their interest in linguistics and career objectives.
