What you'll study

This programme is built around an advanced design studio that occupies the core of the year, supported by specialist design and research modules. You will undertake a major project (often a design-based dissertation or portfolio-driven thesis) that allows sustained development of an original architectural proposal.

• Advanced Design Studio: long-studio format focused on conceptual development, spatial strategy, iterative testing and presentation techniques.
• Digital Design and Fabrication: computational design methods, parametric modelling, CNC and rapid-prototyping workflows to explore form, performance and making.
• Materiality and Technology: research into materials, detailing, constructability and integration of building technologies with design intent.
• Sustainability and Environmental Design: passive design strategies, performance assessment, and sustainable urban responses.
• Urban and Contextual Studies: analysis of sites, urban morphology, heritage and the socio-economic forces shaping architecture at different scales.
• Research Methods for Design: methodological approaches, critical theory and strategies for turning enquiry into design outcomes.
• Major Project / Dissertation: an individual, staff-supervised project that demonstrates original thinking, rigorous research and professional-level presentation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK undergraduate degree in architecture (or an approved related discipline) at a 2:1 level or equivalent. Applicants with a lower-class degree but substantial relevant professional experience or a strong portfolio may be considered.

All applicants must submit a portfolio demonstrating design ability, process work and technical competence. Where the first language is not English, evidence of proficiency is required; applicants should consult the university for the acceptable qualifications and minimum scores.

Selection may also take into account relevant professional experience and a statement of purpose outlining your interests and proposed direction for the major project. International applicants should provide evidence of equivalent qualifications and may need to supply transcripts and references.
