What you'll study

This programme introduces core concepts and theories in international relations and comparative politics and builds applied skills for analysing contemporary global issues. You will study foundational modules in international relations theory, comparative politics, global governance and political economy, alongside methods training in qualitative and quantitative research.

• Core topics: IR theory, global governance, international political economy, security studies, diplomacy and foreign policy.
• Comparative politics: political institutions, party systems, electoral behaviour and state-society relations across regions.
• Research methods: research design, qualitative methods, statistics for social sciences and a supervised research project or dissertation.
• Optional modules: development and human rights, migration and refugee studies, environmental politics, conflict resolution, media and politics, and regionally focused units on Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia or the Americas.
• Skills and assessment: teaching typically combines lectures, seminars, simulations, group work and guest lectures. Assessment is by essays, policy briefs, research projects, presentations and unseen exams.
• Placement and study abroad: the programme often offers opportunities for a work placement year or a study abroad semester with partner institutions, enabling practical experience in policy organisations, NGOs, or international companies.

Entry requirements

Applicants should demonstrate a strong secondary education background and interest in politics or international affairs. Typical offers at A level are in the range commonly required for undergraduate degrees in the UK, and equivalent qualifications such as BTEC, Scottish Highers, or an international diploma are also accepted. The programme welcomes international qualifications; applicants should show evidence of ability in English where English is not their first language.
