What you'll study

The programme combines core finance techniques with property-sector applications. Typical taught modules cover real estate valuation and appraisal; investment appraisal and financial modelling; real estate finance and capital markets; asset and portfolio management; property development and planning; and real estate market analysis and economics. You will study research methods and complete a substantial dissertation or a consultancy-style project focused on a real-world investment or finance issue.

Teaching uses a mix of lectures, seminars, case studies and practical workshops. Assessment methods commonly include individual coursework, group projects and presentations, quantitative assignments using financial modelling, unseen exams and the final research project.

Programme structure

• Full-time: typically structured across taught modules delivered in semesters followed by an independent research project or dissertation.
• Part-time: modular delivery over a longer period to accommodate working students, with the research project completed in the final stage.
• Optional modules: depending on intake and availability, options may include sustainable property investment, international real estate, real estate law and regulation, or specialised topics in development finance.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a good undergraduate degree in a relevant subject such as real estate, finance, economics, business or a related discipline. Candidates with lower-class degrees and relevant professional experience or recognised professional qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. Non-graduates with substantial industry experience may also be considered.

International applicants whose first language is not English are normally required to demonstrate competence in English through a recognised test. Applicants may be asked to supply a personal statement and references, and professional experience in real estate or finance is viewed positively. Admissions does not typically require GMAT or GRE scores.

Graduates go on to careers across investment and finance functions within the property sector. Typical roles include investment analyst, asset manager, portfolio manager, valuation surveyor, development analyst, fund manager, corporate real estate manager and real estate consultant. Employers include investment banks, pension funds, REITs and property funds, real estate advisers and surveying firms, property developers and local or central government bodies involved in property strategy.
