What you'll study

This master's provides a blended programme of academic modules and assessed practice learning. Core teaching covers the theoretical foundations of social work, social policy and law, ethics and professional values, diversity and anti-oppressive practice, safeguarding adults and children, mental health and complex needs, and contemporary practice with children, families and adults.

Research methods and critical reflection are embedded throughout the programme, enabling students to evaluate evidence and apply it to practice. The course typically includes focused modules on practice assessment and intervention, risk management, and working in partnership with service users, families and other professionals.

Practice learning is central: students complete multiple assessed placements in statutory, health or voluntary sector settings arranged through the university's practice partnerships. Placements are supported by practice educators and integrated with taught modules so that academic learning and direct practice inform each other.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a UK undergraduate degree, typically at 2:1 level; candidates with a 2:2 or an equivalent overseas qualification may be considered where they can demonstrate relevant professional or voluntary experience and academic potential. Previous study in social sciences is advantageous but not essential.

All offers are subject to satisfactory references, an enhanced DBS (or equivalent) check and occupational health clearance. Applicants must provide a personal statement explaining their motivation for social work, evidence of experience with vulnerable people or community work, and will usually be invited to an interview or assessment centre.

Functional skills in English and mathematics are required; applicants should check the programme guidance for accepted equivalencies if they do not hold GCSEs. International applicants must meet the university's English language requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify for application to register as social workers with the statutory regulator in England and go on to work across local authority children’s and adults’ services, the NHS, probation services, housing and homelessness teams, mental health services, and national or local charities. Roles include children’s social worker, adult social care practitioner, community mental health social worker, family support worker and practice educator.

Many alumni progress into specialist practice areas, team leadership, and strategic or policy roles; others continue into research or doctorate study. The course’s strong practice focus and local partnerships support employability and provide opportunities for networking with employers throughout training.
