What you'll study

The programme combines social work theory, law, ethics and research with practical skill development and supervised practice learning. Core areas include social work practice with individuals and families, group and community work, social policy, human growth and development, mental health, safeguarding and protection, and professional ethics and values.

Study is organised around campus-based modules and practice placements. Campus modules cover topics such as communication and assessment; intervention models and care planning; legislation and legal frameworks relevant to social work; diversity, anti-oppressive practice and cultural competence; and research methods for reflective practice. Skills workshops and simulated practice sessions help students develop interviewing, risk assessment and record-keeping competence.

Practice learning is a central feature: students complete multiple assessed placements in statutory, voluntary and community settings under the supervision of experienced practitioners. Placements provide experience across different service user groups and settings, enabling students to integrate theory with direct practice. The programme culminates in advanced practice and an emphasis on professional readiness for statutory registration.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a combination of academic ability, personal suitability and relevant experience of working or volunteering with people in need. Typical entry routes include A-levels, vocational qualifications, or equivalent qualifications from further education or overseas providers, together with evidence of literacy and numeracy competence.

Selection also involves a written application, references, a disclosure and barring service (DBS) check, a satisfactory health declaration, and an interview to assess motivation, values and interpersonal skills. Prior experience in settings such as social care, health, youth work, community organisations or advocacy is highly desirable and can strengthen an application.

Career prospects

Graduates who successfully complete the qualifying degree are eligible to apply for registration with the relevant professional regulator and to work as qualified social workers. Common graduate roles include children and families social worker, adult social care practitioner, mental health social worker, and roles in safeguarding, transitions and integrated care teams.

Many graduates also move into practice educator roles, service management, policy development, research, or third-sector positions such as advocacy and community development. The course’s emphasis on transferable skills — assessment, case management, multi-agency working and reflective practice — supports career progression and further postgraduate study in areas such as social work leadership, social policy or family therapy.
