What you'll study

This programme combines intensive language acquisition with modules in translation theory, interpreting practice and cultural studies. You will develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in your chosen language(s) and apply them to professional contexts such as legal, technical and audiovisual translation.

• Core language modules – progressive grammar, conversation, phonetics and advanced written expression tailored to beginners or ab initio starters through to degree level.
• Translation studies – introduction to translation theory, specialised translation (legal, technical, financial), computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and project work.
• Interpreting modules – sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting practice, note-taking techniques and ethics of interpreting.
• Linguistics and cultural studies – sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, literature, film and cultural history relevant to the language areas you study.
• Professional skills – subtitling and localisation, proofreading and editing, translation management, and dissemination of multilingual content for digital environments.
• Year abroad/placement – opportunities for study, work placements or internships overseas to consolidate language skills and gain professional experience in a host institution, company or translation agency.

Entry requirements

Entry is typically based on a strong secondary school qualification or its international equivalent and evidence of ability in the language(s) you wish to study. Applicants who are non-native speakers will need to demonstrate adequate English-language competence; international applicants may be asked to provide an English language test certificate.

• Prior study of the chosen modern language is usually expected for advanced-entry streams; some variants accept beginners or offer ab initio pathways.
• Standard application documents: academic transcripts, personal statement outlining language experience and motivation, and references.
• Selection may include a short written task, language assessment or interview to assess suitability for translation/interpreting modules.
