What you'll study

This honours degree combines classroom-based learning with assessed practice placements and simulated practice to develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required of registered social workers. You will study core topics such as human development, social policy and law, safeguarding, mental health, equality and anti‑oppressive practice, risk assessment and informed decision making. Research methods and evidence‑informed practice are embedded throughout, with modules that enable you to critically evaluate interventions and produce practice‑relevant inquiry.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, small group tutorials, practice simulation and supervised learning in social care and health settings. The programme emphasises reflective practice, partnership working and strengths‑based approaches. Students complete multiple assessed placements in statutory, voluntary or third‑sector organisations to apply theory to practice and meet the professional capabilities required by the social work regulator.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a combination of prior qualifications (A‑levels, BTEC, access diplomas or recognised equivalents). Admissions decisions also take into account personal statement, references and relevant life or work experience. You will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English and meet any professional regulator expectations for language, communication and numeracy.

All offers are subject to satisfactory occupational health screening, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and clearance to undertake practice placements.
