What you'll study

This conjoint programme integrates the core disciplines of business with the scientific study of psychology. You will complete a combination of business core papers—such as accounting and finance fundamentals, marketing, management, organisational behaviour, business law and quantitative methods—alongside psychology papers covering research methods, statistics for psychology, biological bases of behaviour, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and abnormal psychology.

• Business components: introductory accounting, micro- and macro-economics, principles of marketing, human resource and organisational behaviour, strategic management, business analytics and elective majors (for example finance, marketing, international business, entrepreneurship).
• Psychology components: psychological research methods and experimental design, psychometrics and assessment, behavioural neuroscience, lifespan development, social and personality psychology, health psychology and applied topics such as clinical or counselling approaches depending on elective choices.
• Practical learning: applied projects, lab-based research, group work, case studies, and opportunities for workplace experience or community placements coordinated through AUT’s partnerships.
• Capstone and research: final-year research projects or capstone papers that allow integration of business and psychological perspectives, and develop independent research and professional skills.

Entry requirements

Admission to the conjoint requires university entrance from a recognised secondary qualification or an equivalent tertiary qualification. Applicants are expected to meet AUT’s general admission standards, including sufficient preparation in English; specific English-language test scores are required for applicants whose prior study was not in English. Mathematics or statistics at senior secondary level is recommended because of quantitative components in both business and psychology.

Selection may consider academic performance, previous study in relevant subjects, and any supporting documentation of readiness for combined degree study. Applicants with non-traditional backgrounds may be considered through alternative admission pathways or bridging programmes offered by AUT.

Graduates leave with a versatile combination of business acumen and understanding of human behaviour. Typical roles include business analyst, human resources or talent consultant, marketing and consumer insights analyst, project coordinator, client or account manager, and roles in organisational development. If you wish to practise as a registered psychologist in New Zealand, further postgraduate training and professional registration are required; this conjoint provides a strong foundation for postgraduate qualifications in clinical, counselling, organisational or health psychology.
