What you'll study

The Biopsychology degree integrates core psychology with cellular and systems neuroscience. Early modules build foundational knowledge in general psychology, introductory biology, chemistry and statistics. Core biopsychology topics typically include biological bases of behaviour, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, psychopharmacology, cognitive neuroscience and behavioural neuroscience.

Instruction emphasises empirical methods: coursework commonly covers research design, experimental psychology, data analysis and laboratory techniques such as electrophysiology basics, behavioural assays and neuroimaging principles. Students usually complete practical laboratory classes, participate in faculty-led research projects and undertake a senior capstone or honours thesis that involves original data collection and analysis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong secondary school record with coursework in biology and mathematics; chemistry or physics is recommended. Admissions consider the whole application, including academic transcripts, personal statement and references. Students who have completed Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, A-levels or equivalent qualifications are welcome; transfer students with college-level coursework in biology or psychology will also be considered.

Successful applicants typically demonstrate curiosity about brain–behaviour relationships, evidence of quantitative ability, and preparation for laboratory work. Where standardised test scores are submitted, they are considered alongside grades and other application materials. Mature students and those with relevant experiential background are encouraged to apply.

Career prospects

Graduates with a Biopsychology degree pursue a variety of paths. Many continue to postgraduate study in fields such as clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, or biomedical sciences. Others enter the workforce directly in roles such as research assistant, laboratory technician, behavioural health support worker, data analyst or clinical trial coordinator.

The programme also provides a strong foundation for careers in pharmaceuticals, medical technology, public health, education, and science communication. The combination of research experience, quantitative skills and substantive knowledge in brain science is attractive to employers in both the public and private sectors.
