What you'll study

This programme combines theory, applied methods and practice to prepare you to assess, plan for and reduce disaster risk within development contexts. Core topics typically include disaster risk assessment and risk modelling, disaster risk reduction policy and governance, climate change adaptation, community resilience and vulnerability analysis, and humanitarian response principles.

Students also study applied methods such as GIS for hazard and risk mapping, qualitative and quantitative research methods, project monitoring and evaluation, and stakeholder engagement. The degree offers a choice of a substantial research thesis or a supervised professional project/capstone, enabling you to focus on academic research or applied workplace challenges.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as environmental science, geography, engineering, social sciences, public health, development studies or an equivalent qualification. Applicants with substantial relevant professional experience in disaster risk management, emergency services, humanitarian organisations or related fields may also be considered.

International applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University’s English language requirements. Selection may also take into account a candidate’s academic record, curriculum vitae and a statement of purpose outlining professional aims and how the programme aligns with those goals.
