The Bachelor of Medical Imaging at Central Queensland University trains students to become registered medical radiation practitioners who perform diagnostic imaging across a range of modalities. It suits science-minded students who enjoy hands-on patient care, anatomy and imaging technology, and who are seeking a career in hospitals, imaging centres or regional health services.
The program combines foundational biomedical science with applied imaging technology and professional practice. Early study covers human anatomy and physiology, pathology, radiation physics and radiation biology. Core imaging units introduce image acquisition and processing, radiographic positioning, patient care and clinical safety.
Teaching is a mix of lectures, laboratory-based simulation, online learning and extensive on-site clinical placements. Assessment typically includes practical demonstrations, written exams, case reports and clinical competency records.
Applicants should have completed a senior secondary qualification or recognised equivalent. Academic prerequisites commonly include demonstrated competence in English and a foundation in science; units in biology, chemistry or physics are highly recommended. Selection may be competitive and based on a combination of secondary results and other selection criteria.
Accepted applicants must meet non-academic requirements before clinical placements, such as a criminal history check, immunisation and health screening, and may need to provide evidence of current first aid/CPR certification. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through an accepted test or qualification.
Graduates qualify to work as medical imaging practitioners in hospitals, private imaging centres and community health services. Common early-career roles include radiographer and modality-specific positions in CT, MRI and ultrasound. With further training or experience, graduates may progress to advanced practice roles, clinical education, equipment management, quality assurance, or research roles. The degree also provides a pathway to postgraduate study in specialised imaging or health science disciplines.
