What you'll study

This master’s programme combines advanced theory, imaging physics and extensive clinical practice to build competence across a broad range of ultrasound examinations. Core subjects typically cover ultrasound physics and instrumentation, image optimisation and artefacts, professional practice and patient care, and research methods.

• Abdominal and retroperitoneal ultrasound – liver, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and adrenal glands.
• Obstetrics and gynaecology – first, second and third trimester assessment, fetal biometry, placenta and gynaecological scanning.
• Vascular ultrasound – peripheral arterial and venous studies, carotid duplex and interpretation of haemodynamic findings.
• Small parts and superficial structures – thyroid, breast, scrotum and other high‑resolution targets.
• Musculoskeletal and paediatric ultrasound – common protocols and paediatric considerations.
• Cardiac imaging fundamentals – introductory echocardiography principles as they relate to sonographic practice.
• Clinical practicum and competency assessment – supervised placements in clinical settings, logging of required case numbers and practical assessments to demonstrate workplace readiness.
• Research project or major portfolio – applied research or evidence‑based practice project that develops critical appraisal and scholarly communication skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor degree in a health‑related discipline (for example, medical imaging, radiography, nursing, physiotherapy or another allied health field) or equivalent professional experience. Applicants without a health degree but with substantial relevant clinical experience may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

• Academic transcript demonstrating completion of an undergraduate degree or approved equivalent.
• Evidence of relevant clinical experience is preferred; some places may require prior exposure to medical imaging or patient assessment skills.
• Demonstrated English language proficiency for international applicants (e.g. IELTS or equivalent) where required by university policy.
• Successful applicants must meet health and safety requirements for clinical placements, which typically include immunisation status, police checks and any workplace screening specified by placement partners.
• Selection may include interview or practical assessment to confirm suitability for clinical training.
