What you'll study

This short MSc route focuses on advanced aspects of midwifery practice and evidence-based care. Teaching typically covers higher-level clinical decision-making, advanced maternal and fetal assessment, management of complex pregnancy and childbirth, and public health approaches to maternal and infant wellbeing. Students also study leadership and quality improvement in maternity services, professional and ethical issues in midwifery, and research methods tailored to clinical practice.

Programme components usually include a mix of taught modules and a short dissertation, capstone or practice-based project. Practical learning takes place through simulated skills sessions and supervised clinical practice in partnership with local NHS Trusts, and assessment methods commonly include objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), case-based assessments, written assignments and the research/project submission.

Entry requirements

• Professional registration: typically a current midwifery registration (e.g. NMC registration) or equivalent professional registration/experience in maternity care.
• Academic background: an honours degree in a relevant subject is normally expected, or equivalent professional experience if the academic requirement is not met.
• Clinical credibility: recent clinical practice in midwifery or maternity care demonstrating suitability for postgraduate study and practice-based learning.
• Other requirements: two references (one clinical), satisfactory occupational health clearance and an enhanced DBS check where applicable. International applicants will need to meet the programme's English language requirements (for example an accepted academic IELTS profile or equivalent).

Career prospects

Graduates use the advanced knowledge and skills gained on this programme to progress into senior clinical roles within maternity services, such as specialist midwife roles (for example in fetal medicine, neonatal liaison, or perinatal mental health), community and caseload midwifery leadership, practice educator or clinical supervisor positions. The programme also prepares midwives for roles in service improvement, audit and governance, commissioning and policy development, and provides a foundation for doctoral study or research careers in maternal and child health.
