What you'll study

This degree blends clinical theory, simulated practice and extensive workplace placements. Early modules build a foundation in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology, alongside professional practice, ethics and communication skills. Core clinical modules cover patient assessment, managing medical and traumatic emergencies, airway and resuscitation skills, wound and fracture care, mental health in emergency settings and long-term condition management.

Practical learning takes place in the university's clinical skills and simulation facilities and on placement with regional ambulance services and other healthcare providers. You will complete supervised clinical practice across a range of environments including emergency ambulance, urgent care, primary care and community settings, developing diagnostic reasoning, clinical decision-making and leadership. The programme also includes modules on research methods and leadership to prepare you for evidence-based practice and career progression.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold a secondary school qualification in English and mathematics (or equivalent) at a recognised standard. The programme accepts academic qualifications such as A-levels and applied qualifications (for example BTEC), as well as relevant health-related qualifications and prior learning where appropriate. Successful applicants must pass occupational health checks, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and fitness-to-practise screening; some placements may also require a valid driving licence and ability to travel to placement locations.

Selection typically involves an interview and assessments to evaluate communication skills, situational judgement and suitability for professional practice. International applicants should demonstrate proficiency in English in line with professional registration requirements.

Career prospects

On successful completion graduates are prepared to apply for registration with the professional regulator for paramedics and to practise as qualified paramedics in ambulance services, urgent care centres, emergency departments, community healthcare teams and industrial or event medical services. Many graduates move into specialist or advanced practice roles such as critical care paramedic, advanced paramedic practitioner or clinical team leader. Other career pathways include education and training, research, ambulance service management, primary care roles and opportunities in private and charitable emergency medical provision.
