What you'll study

This programme combines practical musicianship with industry-facing skills and academic study of popular music. You will develop performance, composition and production abilities alongside modules on music technology, popular music history and music business. Teaching typically mixes workshops, ensemble practice, studio time, seminars and individual projects.

• Performance and Ensemble – instrumental and vocal technique, band and ensemble work, live performance practice and stagecraft.
• Songwriting and Composition – approaches to writing for contemporary popular styles, arranging, hooks and lyrics, and composing for different media.
• Music Production and Technology – multi-track recording, mixing, use of DAWs, sampling, synthesis and studio workflow.
• Popular Music Studies – critical and historical perspectives on popular music, genres, subcultures and identity.
• Music Business and Professional Practice – marketing, copyright, publishing, artist development, promotion, and project management for music careers.
• Creative Project / Major Project – a substantial final-year project that can take the form of an album, a live production, a portfolio of songs, or a research-led project supported by performance or recordings.
• Optional Modules and Work-Based Learning – opportunities to take modules in live sound, film and media music, community music, or to undertake a placement or professional practice module to gain industry experience.

The programme emphasises practical assessment (recordings, performances, portfolios) alongside written work such as critical essays and reflective portfolios. Facilities typically available include rehearsal rooms, recording studios, Mac suites with industry-standard software, and performance venues to support practical learning.

Entry requirements

Typical entry routes include A-levels, BTEC Nationals, Access to Higher Education Diplomas or equivalent qualifications. Applicants are usually expected to present a combination of academic qualifications and practical experience in music.

• Academic qualifications – A-levels or equivalent qualification; specific subject requirements may not be strict but a recognised qualification in music or a related subject is advantageous.
• Practical evidence – an audition, video or audio portfolio demonstrating performance, songwriting or production skills is normally required as part of the application process.
• Other qualifications – BTEC Music, City & Guilds/graded practical music exams, or a relevant Access course are acceptable; mature applicants with relevant work or performance experience are encouraged to apply.
• English language – international applicants will need to meet the University's English language requirements.

Shortlisting for interview/audition will be based on your application, reference and submitted materials; the interview or audition gives an opportunity to discuss goals, experience and to demonstrate musicianship.

Graduates from the Popular Music pathway pursue a wide range of careers within the music and creative industries. The programme provides practical skills and industry knowledge that support freelance and salaried roles, or further study.
