This programme builds a firm foundation in the core areas of chemistry—organic, inorganic and physical chemistry—while integrating focused modules on atmospheric and environmental topics. Early years concentrate on essential chemical principles and practical laboratory skills: chemical bonding and structure, thermodynamics and kinetics, spectroscopy and quantitative analysis. As you progress you study atmospheric composition and chemistry, aerosol and particulate processes, photochemistry, and the chemical drivers of air quality and climate.
Practical work is a major element throughout the degree: you will gain experience in modern analytical techniques such as gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, and techniques for particulate sampling and characterisation. Training in data analysis, experimental design and modelling of atmospheric processes is included, and field-based or laboratory-based projects give hands-on experience of real-world environmental sampling and monitoring.
In the final year you undertake an independent research project or dissertation focused on an atmospheric or environmental chemistry topic, supervised by academic staff active in related research. Optional modules allow you to tailor the degree towards areas such as environmental monitoring, atmospheric modelling, climate chemistry, or advanced analytical methods.
You should have a strong science background. Typical applicants will have advanced-level qualifications that include chemistry and at least one other maths or science subject (for example mathematics, physics or biology). The programme accepts a range of UK and international qualifications; relevant practical experience and strong numerical skills are important.
Successful applicants are expected to demonstrate laboratory experience, a good grounding in numeracy, and an aptitude for problem solving and data interpretation. Applicants with non-standard qualifications or significant relevant work experience are considered on an individual basis. English language proficiency is required for international applicants.
