What you'll study

This honours degree combines applied biological science and professional practice with extensive clinical experience. Modules develop your understanding of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, infection prevention and control, and perioperative care. You will learn clinical and technical skills relevant to anaesthesia, surgery and recovery through lectures, practical sessions in clinical skills and simulation suites, and supervised placements in NHS theatres and critical care areas.

The programme is typically structured across three years, with increasing levels of clinical responsibility. Early modules focus on foundational science and observational practice; middle years emphasise procedural competence, patient assessment and multidisciplinary working; final-year work includes advanced clinical decision-making, leadership, evidence-based practice and a dissertation or practice-based research project. Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate academic achievement in A-levels, BTEC or equivalent vocational qualifications, preferably including a science subject. Typical offers require successful completion of secondary qualifications and evidence of suitability for clinical practice. GCSEs (or equivalent) in English language and mathematics are commonly requested. International applicants must meet English language requirements.

All applicants will be required to undergo occupational health screening, immunisation checks, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and any additional checks required by placement providers. Successful application also depends on fitness to practise and the ability to meet essential practical competencies in clinical settings.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as Operating Department Practitioners and can work across anaesthetic, surgical and recovery phases of care. Typical first roles include theatre ODP in acute hospitals, recovery practitioner, or roles supporting anaesthetic teams. With experience, ODPs can progress into senior clinical positions, education and training, mentorship, theatre management, clinical governance, specialist perioperative roles, or research and quality improvement. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in healthcare, advanced clinical practice or leadership.
