What you'll study

This programme begins with a foundation year that develops essential mathematics, programming and academic skills needed for undergraduate study. After successful completion of the foundation stage you progress into the honours degree, where the taught content balances core computer science theory with hands-on practical work.

• Foundation year: introductory programming, basic mathematics for computing, digital literacy, study skills and problem-solving.
• Early years of the degree (Level 4–5): programming and software development, data structures and algorithms, discrete mathematics, computer systems and architecture, databases, web technologies, and networks.
• Later years (Level 6): advanced modules such as operating systems, software engineering and project management, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity, human–computer interaction, and a substantial individual or group final-year project that demonstrates practical and research skills.
• Practical learning: laboratory sessions, coding assignments, team projects, and opportunities to work with industry datasets or on employer-sponsored briefs.
• Optional elements: professional skills modules, short placement or internship opportunities where available, and elective modules that allow specialisation in areas such as data science, security or web/mobile development.

Entry requirements

The foundation route is designed for applicants who do not meet the direct-entry requirements for the standard BSc but show potential to succeed in higher education. Typical entry requirements include a portfolio of qualifications demonstrating numeracy and some ICT experience, and GCSE-level passes in English and mathematics (or recognised equivalents).

City welcomes applications from a wide range of backgrounds, including mature learners and international students with equivalent secondary qualifications. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate English language proficiency through an accepted qualification or test.
