What you'll study

The programme builds from foundational programming and computational thinking to advanced topics across software engineering, systems and intelligent computing. Early modules typically cover programming (often in languages such as Python and Java), discrete mathematics, data structures and algorithms, and computer architecture. As you progress you study databases, operating systems, networking, web and mobile development, software design and testing, and human–computer interaction.

Final-year study focuses on specialist optional modules and an independent honours project that lets you apply theory to a substantial practical problem. Typical optional and advanced topics include machine learning and artificial intelligence, data analytics, cybersecurity and forensics, cloud computing, embedded systems and Internet of Things, and enterprise software development. The course emphasises practical labs, group software projects, and a portfolio of work.

There is usually an option to take a placement or year in industry between years two and three, or to follow a foundation or integrated route for applicants who need additional preparation. Assessment uses a mix of coursework, practical projects, presentations and exams.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have qualifications demonstrating competence in mathematics and analytical thinking. Typical academic offers ask for successful completion of A-levels (including maths where possible), a relevant BTEC or equivalent qualifications, or an approved access diploma for higher education. Applicants without standard qualifications may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience or a foundation year where available.

UK applicants are normally expected to have a good standard of secondary education including at least GCSE-level maths; English language competence is also required. International applicants must hold a recognised secondary/international qualification equivalent to UK entry requirements and demonstrate English language proficiency through an accepted test or qualification.
