What you'll study

This programme covers the full software development lifecycle, combining core computer science foundations with practical engineering skills. In early years you will study programming, data structures and algorithms, computer systems and discrete mathematics to build a strong theoretical base.

• Programming and software development: object-oriented and functional programming, software design patterns, unit testing and version control.
• Core computer science: algorithms, data structures, operating systems, and computer architecture.
• Software engineering principles: requirements engineering, software design, modelling, verification and validation, and software project management.
• Databases and web technologies: relational databases, SQL, web application development and APIs.
• Systems and security: network basics, cybersecurity principles and secure coding practices.
• Advanced topics: mobile and cloud development, DevOps practices, performance engineering, and optional modules such as machine learning, human–computer interaction or embedded systems depending on availability.
• Group and individual projects: a major team software project simulating real-world development, plus an individual dissertation or capstone project to demonstrate independent engineering competence.

Entry requirements

Entry is normally based on a combination of academic qualifications and evidence of aptitude for computing. Applicants are expected to have studied a relevant subject such as mathematics or computing at upper-secondary level. Typical entry routes include A-levels, an International Baccalaureate or recognised international qualifications; the university also accepts vocational qualifications and will consider applicants with relevant prior learning or experience.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved test or qualification. Alternative routes include foundation programmes and access courses for students who do not meet direct-entry requirements.
