What you'll study

This programme combines core journalism skills with specialist sports reporting. You study reporting and newswriting, feature and long-form sports journalism, interview techniques, live event coverage and match-reporting alongside modules in multimedia production, broadcast journalism for radio and TV, and social media and audience engagement. Practical modules teach camera, editing and sound skills, while data and statistics for sport and sports law and ethics provide the contextual knowledge needed for responsible reporting.

Coursework centres on assessed practical outputs — written copy, podcasts, short documentaries and live packages — and you complete a substantial final project or dissertation focused on an investigative or creative sports journalism topic. There is also an industry placement or professional project option that gives extended real-world experience with media outlets, clubs, agencies or sports organisations.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a secondary school qualification equivalent to three full A-levels, Scottish Highers, an International Baccalaureate or an approved vocational qualification. Admissions look for evidence of strong English language skills and an ability to write clearly under deadlines. You will usually be asked to submit a short written sample or a portfolio of recent journalism, plus a personal statement describing relevant experience — for example, student media, local press, blogs, broadcast samples, internships or volunteering.

City may also require GCSE-level passes (or equivalents) in English and maths, and international applicants must meet the university's English language requirements. Mature applicants with relevant experience in sports, media or communications are considered on an individual basis.
