What you'll study

This joint honours degree brings together core psychological theory and laboratory-based approaches with sociological analysis of social life, institutions and inequality. In the early stages you will build foundations in psychological topics such as cognition, developmental psychology, biological bases of behaviour, social psychology and basic statistics and research methods, while also studying sociological introductions covering sociological theory, social research methods and key areas such as culture, class, crime and family.

Across the programme you can expect a mixture of lectures, small-group seminars, laboratory practicals and data workshops. Research methods and quantitative skills are emphasised in both subjects: psychology modules typically include experimental design, statistical analysis and practical reports; sociology modules develop qualitative and quantitative approaches to studying communities, organisations and social policy.

In later years you will choose optional modules that reflect your interests — for example social psychology, mental health, criminology, gender and media, migration, social inequality or applied research projects — and you will complete independent research projects or dissertations in one or both disciplines. There are opportunities to apply your learning through placements, community-based projects or internships where available.

Entry requirements

Keele looks for applicants with a strong academic background and evidence of interest in both disciplines. Typical applicants present A-levels, Scottish Highers, BTEC or equivalent qualifications; Keele also welcomes Access to HE, international qualifications and mature students. Admissions consider subject choices and performance across qualifications rather than a single subject requirement.

Applicants should have competent numeracy and literacy skills; a GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics is normally expected. Admissions interviews or personal statements are used to assess motivation, communication skills and suitability for a programme that combines laboratory work and social research.

Graduates of Psychology with Sociology leave with a strong combination of analytical, research and communication skills attractive to a wide range of employers. Career paths commonly taken include social and market research, human resources, public policy, community and youth work, criminal justice and probation services, health and social care roles, and roles in education, advocacy and charity sectors.

For those wishing to continue in psychology, the degree provides the research and theoretical background needed for postgraduate conversion courses or clinical and counselling training routes (subject to meeting specific professional entry requirements). The sociological component supports careers in policy analysis, social planning and research, and roles that require an understanding of social structures and diversity.
