The Bachelor of Music combines core studies in aural skills, harmony and music theory with applied practical training in performance, composition and music technology. Course components typically include individual lessons on your principal instrument or voice, ensemble rehearsals, music history and analysis, song-writing and arranging, and studio-based units in recording, mixing and music production. Students also study music business and industry practices, professional development, and elective topics that may cover film scoring, electronic music, popular music studies or pedagogy.

The degree structure is generally a mix of required core units and electives across three years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent). Assessment methods are varied and include performance examinations and recitals, composition portfolios, written essays, practical studio projects and group-based industry assignments. In the final year many students undertake a major project or recital that demonstrates their practical and creative capabilities.

Entry requirements

Admission is through the university's standard undergraduate application process and typically requires successful completion of senior secondary schooling or an equivalent qualification. Domestic applicants are usually assessed on their tertiary entrance score (such as ATAR) or recognised equivalent, while alternative entry may be available for mature-age applicants or those with relevant vocational qualifications or experience.
