What you'll study

This degree combines rigorous training in vocal technique, acting for musical theatre and movement with core musicianship studies and professional practice. In your first year you will build foundational skills in voice, acting, movement, music theory, aural skills and repertoire work. Later years broaden technical and creative capacity through applied lessons, scene and song study, ensemble performance, musical direction basics, stagecraft, audition technique and industry-facing projects.

• Core practical units: individual voice lessons, acting for musical theatre, dance/movement classes, scene study, song interpretation and repertoire preparation.
• Musicianship and theory: harmony and analysis, aural training, keyboard skills and score reading tailored to musical theatre repertoire.
• Performance and ensemble: staged scenes, full-scale musical productions, cabaret and small ensemble work offering public performance experience.
• Professional skills: audition technique, career development, self-management, casting practice, musical direction fundamentals and recording/project portfolio development.
• Capstone and research: final-year recital or production project demonstrating integrated performance, dramaturgy and professional presentation.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally require completion of secondary school or an equivalent tertiary entrance qualification. Admission is based on both academic eligibility and a successful audition process that assesses vocal ability, acting potential and movement/dance aptitude. Typical requirements include:

• Demonstrated proficiency in singing and performance through a live or recorded audition including prepared songs in contrasting styles and a short acting monologue.
• Basic musicianship skills: some experience in music reading, aural awareness and keyboard familiarity is advantageous.
• English language proficiency at the University’s accepted level for international students where applicable.
• Mature-age applicants and those without formal academic qualifications may be considered on the basis of audition, portfolio and relevant experience.
