What you'll study

This master's explores contemporary theories of crime and criminalisation, the organisation and practice of criminal justice agencies, and the social and political contexts that shape policy and practice. You will study both theoretical and methodological material and complete a substantial independent research project or professional dissertation.

• Core themes: theories of crime and deviance; comparative criminal justice systems; crime prevention and community safety; punishment, prisons and alternatives; policing and investigative practice; victims, youth justice and restorative approaches.
• Research and methods: quantitative and qualitative research methods for criminology, research design, ethics and applied data analysis tailored to justice settings.
• Applied modules: policy analysis, practitioner perspectives, pathways into offending and desistance, and modules addressing contemporary topics such as cyber-enabled crime, organised crime or drugs and crime (module availability may vary).
• Independent project: a dissertation or practice-led research project that allows you to investigate a substantive question linked to criminology or criminal justice, often with opportunities for practitioner collaboration or placement-based data collection.

Most students follow a full-time route (typically completed in one year) or part-time/flexible study routes to accommodate working professionals.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (for example criminology, sociology, psychology, law, social policy, or policing) at a good second-class honours level or equivalent. Applicants with substantial relevant professional experience in criminal justice, community safety or related statutory and voluntary sectors are also considered.

Admission typically requires a personal statement outlining your reasons for study, a CV, and one or more academic or professional references. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English to the university's required standard.
