What you'll study

This pre-registration master's combines theoretical modules, clinical skills training and a schedule of supervised placements to develop the knowledge, practical competence and professional behaviours required for mental health nursing practice. Core topics typically include mental health assessment and formulation, therapeutic interventions and communication skills, pharmacology and physical health in mental health nursing, law, ethics and safeguarding, recovery-oriented and trauma-informed care, and population mental health across the lifespan.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, simulated clinical scenarios in skills and simulation suites, and practice-based learning in a range of settings such as inpatient units, community mental health teams, crisis and home treatment teams, and specialist services (forensic, perinatal, older adult services). You will also study research methods and evidence-based practice to support clinical decision-making and service improvement. The programme is designed to meet professional practice hours required for Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration through a combination of academic and placement-based learning.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in any subject from a recognised institution. Relevant healthcare or social care experience is desirable and may strengthen an application. Successful applicants must satisfy professional clearance checks before placement, including an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, occupational health screening and provision of satisfactory references.

Applicants whose first language is not English must meet both Oxford Brookes University and NMC English language standards; evidence of an approved English test or other accepted qualifications will be required. Entry also typically involves an interview and assessment of suitability for professional practice, including communication skills, values and resilience.

Career prospects

On successful completion you will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified mental health nurse. Graduates go on to work across NHS mental health trusts, community mental health services, crisis resolution and home treatment teams, inpatient psychiatric units, forensic services, private and independent sectors and voluntary organisations.

Career pathways include roles as staff nurse, specialist practitioner (for example in older adult or perinatal mental health), clinical nurse specialist, nurse consultant or advanced clinical practitioner following further experience and study. Graduates may also progress into management, policy, education or research roles, or pursue postgraduate research degrees or professional prescribing qualifications once eligibility criteria are met.
