What you'll study

This honours LLB gives you the core, qualifying elements of an undergraduate law degree together with modules that concentrate on legislation, policy and regulatory practice. In the early years you study foundational subjects typically covered on qualifying law degrees such as Contract Law, Tort, Criminal Law, Public (Constitutional and Administrative) Law, Land Law and Equity and Trusts. These provide the legal knowledge required for professional progression.

Alongside the core subjects you will take legislative‑focused modules such as Statutory Interpretation and the Legislative Process, Law and Public Policy, Regulatory and Administrative Law, and courses on human rights and the constitutional role of parliaments. Later years allow you to choose optional modules which may include International Law, Commercial Law, Employment Law, Environmental Regulation, and Seminar modules on comparative legislation and drafting.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars and small‑group tutorials and is supported by practical learning: legal research and writing, case analysis, mooting and client interviewing exercises. Assessment is by a mixture of examinations, coursework essays, simulated client work and, where offered, a research dissertation or extended project focussing on an aspect of legislative studies.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have qualifications broadly in line with standard UK undergraduate law programmes. Typical offers are made on the basis of A‑levels, BTEC qualifications, Scottish Highers or international equivalents. Mature students and applicants with non‑traditional qualifications or substantial relevant experience are considered.

All applicants must meet the University’s general admissions requirements, including an appropriate standard of English if English is not your first language (evidence such as an accepted English language test with a level commonly required for undergraduate entry). You will apply through UCAS and may be invited to an interview or assessment as part of the selection process.

Career prospects

Graduates from this programme follow a wide range of legal and policy careers. The LLB provides the academic stage required to progress to professional training for solicitors or barristers (such as the vocational stage required by professional bodies), or to undertake postgraduate legal or public policy study.

Because of the legislative and regulatory emphasis, many alumni also move into roles with government departments, parliamentary or legislative offices, think tanks, regulatory bodies, compliance and policy teams in the private sector, or NGOs. Graduates commonly work as paralegals, policy advisers, legislative analysts, compliance officers, or continue into legal practice, consultancy and academia.
