What you'll study

This blended-award program combines curriculum and pedagogy for early childhood (birth–5/6 years) and primary school (Foundation/Kindergarten to Year 6/7) settings. Core study areas include child development and learning theories, curriculum design for literacy and numeracy, inclusive and differentiated teaching, assessment for learning, behaviour management, and digital pedagogies for young learners. The course emphasises evidence-informed practice with subjects exploring: classroom planning and programming; early years curriculum and transitions; teaching science, humanities and the arts in primary contexts; Indigenous perspectives in education; and supporting diverse learners including students with additional needs.

Learning is delivered primarily online through lectures, tutorials and interactive tasks, supported by synchronous webinars and local tutorial groups where available. A substantial component of the program is professional experience: multiple supervised school and early childhood placements are completed in accredited early childhood centres and primary schools to build classroom skills, professional behaviour and competency against the national teacher standards. Students also complete capstone and reflection units that integrate theory with classroom practice.

Entry requirements

• A recognised undergraduate degree (bachelor or equivalent) in any discipline. Graduates with degrees in education may be required to meet additional requirements.
• Academic transcripts demonstrating satisfactory tertiary performance; applicants who do not meet standard academic thresholds may be considered on the basis of relevant professional experience or additional assessment.
• English language proficiency for international applicants, demonstrated through recognised tests or prior study in English, in line with university policy.
• Clearances and fitness to teach requirements prior to placement, typically including a Working with Children check (or state/territory equivalent), criminal history check and up-to-date immunisations.
• Some applicants may be required to attend an interview or provide a personal statement addressing motivations for teaching and experience with children.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify for initial teacher accreditation and may be eligible for registration with state and territory teacher regulatory authorities, enabling employment as an early childhood teacher or primary classroom teacher in public, private and independent settings. Career pathways include year-level or stage coordination, literacy or numeracy specialist roles, inclusive education and learning support, curriculum leadership, and positions in early childhood services and community education programs.

Many graduates continue professional learning or academic study in areas such as educational leadership, special education or research-based higher degrees. The program’s focus on contemporary pedagogy and practicum experience also supports transition into teaching roles and long-term career progression within schools and early childhood sectors.
