What you'll study

This MA combines core public health theory with applied methods and practice. You will study population health determinants, health promotion, epidemiology and quantitative and qualitative research methods, and learn to design, implement and evaluate public health interventions.

• Core modules typically include concepts in public health, epidemiology and biostatistics, research methods for public health, and health promotion and behaviour change.
• Policy and systems modules cover health policy, public health law and the organisation of health services, with attention to health inequalities and social determinants of health.
• Applied practice options develop skills in needs assessment, programme planning and evaluation, and may include placement or practice-based project modules to apply learning within local health organisations.
• Dissertation or major project enables independent research or an applied public health project on a topic of professional relevance, supported by academic and practice supervisors.

Teaching combines seminars, workshops, case studies and project supervision. Assessment uses a mix of coursework, reports, presentations, practical assignments and a final project or dissertation. The programme is offered with flexible study options to suit full-time students and part-time professionals.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK honours degree (2:2 or above) or an overseas equivalent in a relevant subject such as health, social sciences, life sciences or allied professions. Applicants with substantial professional experience in health, social care, community development or related sectors but without a traditional degree may be considered.

Postgraduate study requires proficiency in English; international applicants will need to demonstrate competence through a recognised qualification or an approved English language test. Applicants may be invited for an interview or asked to submit a personal statement outlining their public health interests and experience.
