What you'll study

This programme combines advanced clinical practice, original research and academic training. You will deepen your knowledge of the biology and pathology of the dental pulp and periapical tissues, master current and emerging endodontic techniques, and conduct an independent research project that contributes to the scientific literature.

• Advanced Clinical Endodontics — complex root canal treatments, retreatments, management of procedural complications, microsurgery and the use of dental operating microscopes.
• Endodontic Materials and Biomaterials — properties and clinical behaviour of sealers, obturation materials, bioceramics and restorative interfaces.
• Regenerative Endodontics and Tissue Engineering — principles and translational approaches to pulp regeneration and biologically based therapies.
• Pain Management and Behavioural Science — pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to acute and chronic odontogenic pain.
• Diagnostic Imaging — advanced radiographic interpretation, cone beam CT in endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.
• Research Methods and Biostatistics — study design, data analysis, ethics, systematic review and critical appraisal skills required to complete a doctoral thesis.
• Teaching and Academic Practice — curriculum development, assessment, supervision and communication skills for clinical educators.
• Dissertation and Viva — original, supervised research leading to a written thesis and oral examination.

Programme structure typically includes taught modules and seminars, supervised clinical requirements in a specialist dental hospital setting, ongoing research activity, regular progress reviews and a final thesis defence. Clinical competency and contribution to undergraduate/postgraduate teaching are expected components.

Entry requirements

• A recognised dental degree (e.g. BDS/DDS) and a postgraduate qualification in Endodontics (Master's or equivalent professional specialist certificate), or demonstrated equivalent clinical specialist experience.
• Evidence of prior clinical experience in endodontics and a portfolio of clinical cases that demonstrates specialist competence.
• A strong academic record in previous postgraduate study; applicants are assessed on overall performance rather than a single numeric threshold.
• A research proposal outlining the intended doctoral project or clear research interests aligned with available supervisors and departmental priorities.
• Language proficiency where required; applicants whose primary language is not the language of instruction may need to demonstrate proficiency according to the university's regulations.
• References from academic and clinical referees and an interview with the programme selection panel are normally part of the selection process.

Career prospects

Graduates of the DSc in Endodontics pursue a range of senior careers including posts in university dentistry faculties as lecturers, senior lecturers or professors; consultant or specialist roles in hospital dental services and specialist clinics; leadership positions in public dental services; and advanced private specialist practice. The research training also prepares graduates for roles in clinical research, industry development of endodontic materials and devices, regulatory science and guideline development. Many alumni combine clinical specialist practice with teaching and research responsibilities.
