What you'll study

This programme integrates core sociology subjects with professional social work training. In the early years you study foundational modules such as Introduction to Sociology, Social Theory, Human Development, Research Methods in Social Sciences and Statistics for Social Research. You then progress to applied social work topics including Principles of Social Work, Casework and Group Work, Community Development, Social Welfare Policy, Mental Health and Counselling Skills.

Advanced modules typically cover topics such as Family and Child Welfare, Criminology and Rehabilitation, Gender and Society, Migration and Refugee Studies, Poverty and Social Exclusion, and Ethics and Professional Practice. A sustained fieldwork component or practicum in an approved social services agency forms an essential part of the degree, giving supervised placement experience in assessment, case management and community interventions. Students also complete a research project or dissertation that applies sociological methods to a social problem.

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised secondary school certificate (or equivalent) with satisfactory grades in the relevant streams. Requirements typically include proficiency in Arabic; knowledge of English is desirable as some reading materials and methodological modules may use English sources.
