This top-up degree builds on prior practical and vocational learning to develop critical understanding of public service policy, leadership and operational practice. Core themes include leadership and management in public services, contemporary public policy, research methods, community safety and risk management, and interdisciplinary approaches to health and social care.

• Leadership and Management for Public Services – theories of leadership, team management, performance measurement and ethical decision-making in public service contexts.
• Research Methods and Applied Project – quantitative and qualitative research techniques, project design, and completion of a substantial independent research project or dissertation rooted in a workplace context.
• Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice and Community Safety – analysis of crime prevention, policing strategies, probation, youth justice and multi-agency working.
• Emergency Planning and Resilience – incident management, emergency response coordination, risk assessment and business continuity for public service organisations.
• Public Policy and Governance – policy development, devolution, accountability, and the relationship between national policy and local service delivery.
• Professional Practice and Work-Based Learning – reflective practice, CPD, employability skills and an emphasis on applied learning through placements or employer-led projects where appropriate.

The programme typically culminates in a researched final project or dissertation that demonstrates the ability to apply theory to practice and to present evidence-based recommendations for a public service organisation.

Entry requirements

The BA (Top-up) is aimed at students who already hold an appropriate Level 5 qualification such as an HND, foundation degree, or equivalent professional qualification in a public services-related subject. Applicants are normally expected to provide evidence of relevant vocational experience, references, and a personal statement outlining suitability and career aims. Mature applicants with substantial relevant experience but different formal qualifications may be considered on an individual basis. English language proficiency is required for applicants whose prior education was not delivered in English.
