What you'll study

The programme blends core modules in English literature with practical creative writing units. You will study a mix of period and thematic literature (for example medieval and early modern texts, Romantic and Victorian writing, modernist and contemporary prose and poetry), alongside modules in literary theory and research methods. Creative writing components include workshops in fiction, poetry, script and narrative non-fiction, with opportunities to explore genre writing, experimental forms and digital storytelling. Assessment typically combines essays, creative portfolios, reflective journals and a larger final project such as a dissertation or a sustained creative portfolio. Students can usually choose optional modules that allow interdisciplinary study—for example modules in film, publishing, journalism, children's literature, or cultural studies—and there are often opportunities to take a placement year or study abroad to gain practical experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have a secondary education qualification equivalent to successful completion of school-leaving qualifications in their country (for example A-levels, BTECs, IB, or recognised international equivalents). You will need demonstrated competence in English language and writing; many applicants provide GCSE/Level 2 English or an equivalent qualification. Mature and international applicants are welcome; the admissions process considers personal statements, references and any relevant experience. Where requested, you may be asked to submit a short portfolio or sample of written work and attend an interview or assessment as part of the selection process.

Graduates go on to careers across the creative and cultural sectors as well as roles that value strong communication and critical thinking. Typical destinations include publishing, journalism, copywriting, content and digital media, public relations and marketing, education and teaching, arts administration, and freelance writing. Many students also progress to postgraduate study in creative writing, literature, publishing or related professional courses in journalism and education.
