What you'll study

This MA combines studio-based practice, critical research and industry-facing projects to help you develop a coherent design voice and professional portfolio. You will explore advanced fashion design processes including conceptual development, narrative and collection thinking, pattern cutting and draping, garment construction and fit, textile selection and surface treatment.

• Design studio practice: development of a capsule collection or focused design project from research and concept through to finished garments and presentation.
• Pattern cutting and construction: advanced bespoke and commercial patterning, toile making, grading considerations and fit development for a range of garment types.
• Digital and traditional techniques: CAD for fashion, digital print and surface manipulation alongside manual processes such as hand finishing, embroidery and experimental textiles.
• Professional practice: industry briefs, brand development, freelance and business skills, pitching and show presentation.
• Research methods and contextual studies: critical frameworks for contemporary fashion, sustainability, consumer culture and ethical production strategies that inform creative outcomes.
• Major project: self-directed final project showcasing your strengths as a designer, typically culminating in a collection, publication or industry-standard portfolio.

Teaching is delivered through workshops, seminars, one-to-one tutorials and industry-led masterclasses, with assessment through practical work, written research and professional presentations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have an honours degree in fashion, textiles, design or a related discipline. Candidates with a lower-class honours degree may be considered if they can demonstrate substantial professional experience in the fashion industry or a strong creative portfolio. You will be asked to submit a portfolio that demonstrates creative ability, technical skill and progression, plus a personal statement outlining your aims for postgraduate study.

Applicants for whom English is not a first language will need to meet the university's English language requirements. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview (in person or online) or asked to provide further evidence of their creative practice.
