FieldIslamic Education

The MA Islamic Education is an interdisciplinary master's programme that examines the theory, history and practice of Islamic educational thought and institutions, both historically and in contemporary contexts. It suits graduates and professionals from education, religious studies, social policy or community leadership who want to develop specialist knowledge for careers in schools, policy, research or community education.

What you'll study

This programme combines theoretical, historical and applied approaches to Islamic education. You study core topics such as classical and modern Islamic pedagogies, the history of Muslim educational institutions, curriculum formation in Islamic contexts, and contemporary debates about faith-based schooling, pluralism and citizenship. Modules typically include a mix of lectures, seminars and case-study workshops.

  • Core themes: theories of education in Islamic thought; development of madrasas and modern Islamic schools; the role of religious knowledge and secular curricula.
  • Contemporary issues: curriculum design and assessment in Muslim contexts, teacher formation and professional development, religious literacy, gender and inclusion, and the interface between state policy and faith schools.
  • Research methods and dissertation: training in qualitative and comparative methods applied to educational settings, culminating in an independent dissertation on a chosen aspect of Islamic education.
  • Optional modules: comparative religion and education, globalisation and education policy, community education and outreach, or modules from related departments to tailor the degree to your interests.

Study modes: the programme is offered full-time and part-time. Assessment is by a combination of essays, project work, presentations and a final research dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours) in education, theology/religious studies, history, social sciences or a related subject. Applicants with significant professional experience in education, community or religious organisations may be considered where their background demonstrates readiness for postgraduate study.

  • Academic qualifications: a relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
  • Professional experience: professional or voluntary experience in teaching, curriculum development, community education, or religious institutions will strengthen an application.
  • Supporting documents: a personal statement outlining relevant interests and proposed research topics, academic transcripts, and references (academic or professional).
  • English language: if English is not your first language, you will need to meet the University's English language entry requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates work across a broad range of sectors where specialist knowledge of Islamic education is valued. Typical career destinations include:

  • Teaching and leadership roles in faith-based schools, supplementary schools and madrasa settings.
  • Curriculum development, teacher training and educational consultancy for community organisations and NGOs.
  • Policy roles in local and national government, education inspectorates or think-tanks focusing on religion, integration and schooling.
  • Research and doctoral study in education, religious studies, sociology or related fields.
  • Community engagement, interfaith organisations and charities working on social cohesion, youth programmes and lifelong learning.
