What you'll study

The programme combines fundamental natural science with specialised geological training. Core taught topics typically include mineralogy and petrology, sedimentology and stratigraphy, structural geology, palaeontology and geochemistry, supported by foundational modules in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Practical training emphasises laboratory techniques (thin-section microscopy, geochemical analyses, grain-size and sedimentology labs), geophysical methods (seismic, magnetics), hydrogeology and environmental geology.

Fieldwork is a central component: students participate in day trips and longer field camps to study outcrops, structural relationships and depositional environments across the Calabrian region and surrounding areas. Training in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and basic geological mapping prepares students for applied roles. The final year normally includes an independent project or dissertation based on field, laboratory or desk-based research.

Entry requirements

Admission normally requires a recognised secondary school leaving qualification with a strong background in science and mathematics. Teaching is primarily in Italian; therefore proficiency in Italian is required for degree-level study.
