FieldGeological Sciences

The Bachelor in Geological Sciences at the University of Calabria is a three-year undergraduate degree that provides a solid grounding in earth science theory, laboratory techniques and field methods. It is well suited to students who enjoy outdoor fieldwork, laboratory analysis and applying physical and chemical principles to understand Earth processes.

What you'll study

The programme combines fundamental natural science with specialised geological training. Core taught topics typically include mineralogy and petrology, sedimentology and stratigraphy, structural geology, palaeontology and geochemistry, supported by foundational modules in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Practical training emphasises laboratory techniques (thin-section microscopy, geochemical analyses, grain-size and sedimentology labs), geophysical methods (seismic, magnetics), hydrogeology and environmental geology.

Fieldwork is a central component: students participate in day trips and longer field camps to study outcrops, structural relationships and depositional environments across the Calabrian region and surrounding areas. Training in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and basic geological mapping prepares students for applied roles. The final year normally includes an independent project or dissertation based on field, laboratory or desk-based research.

Entry requirements

Admission normally requires a recognised secondary school leaving qualification with a strong background in science and mathematics. Typical applicants hold a scientific high-school diploma (or equivalent) including passes in mathematics and at least one science subject such as physics or chemistry. Selection may consider the applicant's academic record, personal statement and, where required, entrance examinations or interview.

Teaching is primarily in Italian; therefore proficiency in Italian is required for degree-level study. International applicants who do not already meet the language requirement are usually expected to demonstrate an appropriate level of Italian or to enrol on a language preparatory course. International qualification equivalence and other specific documentation are handled according to university admissions procedures for foreign students.

Career prospects

Graduates are equipped for a wide range of careers in the public and private sectors. Common destinations include roles in environmental and geological consultancy, hydrogeology and groundwater resource management, geotechnical investigation for construction projects, natural-hazard assessment and mitigation (seismic and landslide risk), and mineral exploration. Skills in GIS and remote sensing also open opportunities in spatial analysis, environmental monitoring and land-use planning.

Other pathways include employment with regional and national geological surveys, water authorities, environmental protection agencies, and engineering firms, or further academic study (master’s programmes or doctoral research) for those aiming to specialise in research, teaching or advanced technical roles.

Why study at University of Calabria

The University of Calabria offers a strong field-based tradition and proximity to a geologically diverse region, providing direct access to active tectonic settings, coastal systems and varied lithologies for practical learning. Teaching combines classroom instruction with well-equipped laboratories and regular field excursions, ensuring students gain hands-on skills.

Students benefit from academic staff engaged in regional and international research, interdisciplinary collaborations and links with local institutions and industry partners, which support internship and applied-project opportunities. The campus environment and departmental facilities make the programme particularly suitable for students seeking a balance of theoretical knowledge and practical geoscience experience.
