What you'll study

This programme integrates core engineering subjects with architectural design and construction technology across a three-year Laurea structure. In the first year you build foundations in mathematics, physics, technical drawing and introduction to architectural representation. Subsequent years introduce structural mechanics, materials science, construction technology, building physics (thermal and acoustic comfort), surveying and geotechnics.

• Design and studio work: architectural representation, design studios that progress from small projects to more complex building design tasks.
• Structural subjects: statics, strength of materials, reinforced concrete and steel design basics, introduction to seismic behaviour relevant to regional practice.
• Construction technology and management: construction methods, site organisation, cost estimation, building contracts and basic construction law.
• Building performance and sustainability: thermal performance, energy efficiency, retrofit techniques, materials durability and life-cycle considerations.
• Digital skills: CAD and BIM workflows, digital modelling, surveying instruments and GIS basics.
• Laboratory and practical activities: materials testing, structural experiments, workshop practice and field surveys using the university’s laboratories and equipment.
• Final project: an integrated design and technical project that demonstrates the ability to coordinate architectural intent with structural and construction solutions.

Teaching methods combine lectures, design studios, laboratory exercises, fieldwork and project-based assessments. There are opportunities for internships and study mobility through national and international exchange schemes.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a recognised secondary school leaving qualification that provides sufficient grounding in mathematics and physics (for example a scientific or technical high school diploma). International applicants should present an equivalent qualification and evidence of language proficiency in Italian or an approved foreign language if the course has components taught in that language.

• Competence in mathematics and technical drawing is expected; preparatory studies in these subjects are advantageous.
• Some selection procedures may include an assessment of basic technical knowledge or an interview to verify preparedness for studio and technical coursework.
• Portfolio submission is sometimes recommended for applicants with strong interest in the architectural-design component, although requirements vary—check the programme guidance for current practice.

Career prospects

Graduates enter roles across the construction, design and building sectors. Typical positions include building engineer, site manager, technical designer, BIM technician/coordinator, works supervisor, and sustainability or energy efficiency consultant. Many graduates work for architectural and engineering firms, construction companies, public administrations or as freelance technical consultants.

The degree also provides the academic foundation to continue to a specialised Laurea Magistrale (master’s) in building engineering, architecture or related engineering fields. Pursuing a master’s and the relevant professional qualification exams is the usual route for registration with professional orders and for assuming full responsibility as an architect or chartered engineer in Italy.
