This master's option combines the technical study of power and propulsion systems with the environmental and regulatory issues that shape their development. What you'll study

The programme covers the fundamentals of propulsion and power systems together with the environmental drivers affecting their design and operation. Core topics include thermodynamics, gas turbine and turbomachinery theory, combustion and emissions, aero‑engine performance, and aircraft power systems. Students also study environmental assessment techniques such as life cycle analysis and noise and emissions measurement, and explore emerging low‑carbon and hybrid electric propulsion concepts.

  • Core technical modules: thermodynamics and heat transfer for propulsion, turbomachinery performance and design, combustion and fuel systems.
  • Environmental and regulatory modules: emissions formation and abatement, atmospheric impacts of aviation, environmental assessment and regulation.
  • Analytical and practical methods: CFD and numerical methods for propulsion, experimental techniques, test facility operation and data analysis.
  • Systems and integration: aircraft power systems, thermal management, propulsion integration and mission analysis.
  • Project: a substantial individual research or industry‑based project that applies engineering tools to a problem in power, propulsion or environmental impact.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally hold a good undergraduate degree in engineering, physics, aerospace, mechanical or a closely related discipline. Relevant industrial experience can strengthen an application and may be considered where academic qualifications differ. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language requirements.
