This master's option combines the technical study of power and propulsion systems with the environmental and regulatory issues that shape their development. It suits engineering graduates and early-career professionals who want to design, test or regulate propulsion systems with an emphasis on emissions, sustainability and future low‑carbon technologies.
The programme covers the fundamentals of propulsion and power systems together with the environmental drivers affecting their design and operation. Core topics include thermodynamics, gas turbine and turbomachinery theory, combustion and emissions, aero‑engine performance, and aircraft power systems. Students also study environmental assessment techniques such as life cycle analysis and noise and emissions measurement, and explore emerging low‑carbon and hybrid electric propulsion concepts.
Applicants normally hold a good undergraduate degree in engineering, physics, aerospace, mechanical or a closely related discipline. Relevant industrial experience can strengthen an application and may be considered where academic qualifications differ. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language requirements.
