What you'll study

This apprenticeship covers the principles and practice of systems engineering across the whole product lifecycle, from requirements through to disposal. Teaching blends applied theory with workplace projects and typically includes modules in systems thinking and lifecycle management, requirements engineering, systems architecture and design, systems integration and verification, modelling and simulation, reliability and maintainability, risk and safety management, human factors and interfaces, and project and programme management.

Training is delivered through a mixture of employer‑led workplace activity, block release or short campus modules, coaching and directed study. Assessment commonly involves workplace evidence and a professional portfolio, technical reports, practical coursework and presentations, culminating in an end‑point assessment or final competence demonstration aligned to the apprenticeship standard.

Entry requirements

Entry is employer‑sponsored: applicants must be employed in a role where they can demonstrate suitable workplace opportunities to meet the apprenticeship outcomes. Typical entry routes include a relevant Level 3 qualification (for example A‑levels, BTEC, or equivalent) or demonstrable work experience in an engineering environment. Employers may set additional requirements such as GCSEs in English and maths (or functional skills equivalents) or prior technical experience.

As a vocational programme, assessment of suitability focuses on job role, employer support and the ability to meet apprenticeship competencies. Applicants who hold higher qualifications may be eligible for credit or tailored learning plans.
