This apprenticeship delivers advanced engineering knowledge and professional skills through a combination of taught modules and a substantial workplace-based project. Typical topics include advanced engineering design and analysis, systems engineering and integration, materials and manufacturing technologies, digital engineering and data analytics, reliability and maintainability, sustainability and lifecycle assessment, and engineering management subjects such as project and programme management, risk and quality management.

Teaching is designed to support application in the workplace: short taught modules and workshops are supplemented by coaching, on-the-job development activities and a major employer-sponsored project or dissertation. Assessment routes usually include coursework, technical reports, employer-validated evidence in a professional portfolio and an end-point assessment that evaluates competence and knowledge in the workplace context.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be employed and supported by an employer as an apprentice. Typical academic entry expectations include an undergraduate degree in engineering or a closely related discipline, or a relevant higher national diploma (HND) with substantial industry experience. Candidates without a conventional degree but with significant technical responsibility and evidence of prior learning may be considered.

Prospective apprentices should demonstrate practical engineering experience, employer sponsorship, and the ability to study at postgraduate level. International applicants will need to meet Cranfield's required English language standard for taught postgraduate study where applicable. Specific selection and eligibility checks are conducted with the employer and Cranfield's apprenticeship team before enrolment.
