What you'll study

Study focuses on practical and theoretical elements of musical theatre and allied skills. Topics explicitly listed by the department include:

• music theory and musicianship
• voice and music ensembles
• acting, reacting and play analysis
• musical theatre technique and audition seminar
• dance styles and technique: ballet, jazz dance, tap dance, dance partnering
• world theatre

Entry requirements

Prospective musical theatre majors must both apply for admission to the University of Tampa and audition for acceptance into the programme. Auditions are accepted digitally or in person at official admissions open house dates; applicants receive access to the SpartanStart Portal after applying and should submit audition materials there. To be considered for performance-based scholarships, audition materials must be submitted by March 1.

Required audition materials for video submissions are:

• VOICE: one up-tempo and one ballad from musical theatre repertoire (32-bar cuts each)
• ACTING: one contemporary monologue (comic or dramatic), maximum 1:30 minutes
• DANCE: a 1–1.5 minute musical theatre or jazz combination that includes at least one pirouette, a developpé or battement, and a leap or grand jeté

For in-person auditions held at Open House, a pianist is provided; bring sheet music and be prepared to perform the voice and acting requirements and discuss prior dance training. Contact admissions at admissions@ut.edu with questions.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for performance roles such as work in national touring companies, regional professional theatres and films, as well as full-time positions at local theme parks. The programme highlights practical production experience and internships (including with a local theme park or theatre company) as pathways to professional employment.

Scholarships & funding angle

Performance-based scholarships are available and require audition submission by March 1 to be considered. The department encourages auditioning early via the SpartanStart Portal; additional departmental scholarships and resources are referenced by the Department of Theatre and Dance.
