Programme overview

Wagner College’s Pre-Law Program is an advising and curricular pathway rather than a single prescribed major: students may major in any discipline while using college resources, faculty advisors and optional minor coursework to prepare for law school. The College follows the American Association of Law Schools’ position that applicants may hold any undergraduate major; the program supplements a liberal arts education with law-related study, internships, mentoring and application guidance including LSAT preparation resources through LSAC.

The Pre-Law minor is interdisciplinary and includes coursework in law, philosophy, politics, critical thinking and writing; it teaches techniques for reading case law, basic constitutional law concepts and experience with mock trial formats. Students are also encouraged to join the Writing Intensive Tutor Program.

Entry requirements

Wagner does not require a particular set of undergraduate courses for pre-law study. Law schools themselves evaluate applicants on college record, activities, recommendations and LSAT scores; applicants must take the LSAT before applying to law school. To declare the Pre-Law minor students use the College’s Declaration of Minor form and can obtain advising through the Center for Academic and Career Engagement (CACE) and designated Pre-Law faculty advisors.

Career prospects

Most students use the program to prepare for law school and subsequent legal careers; the minor and program also suit those aiming for public service or related fields where legal knowledge is valuable. Wagner students have gone on to enroll at a range of law schools nationally. Practical preparation includes internships with district attorney offices, public defenders, courts, legal aid organizations, the UN, civil liberties groups and private law firms, which help confirm career fit and build experience.
