What you'll study

Learning centers on practice and reflection rather than disciplinary coursework. Key components include:

• Up to 225 hours of civic engagement work per academic year (an average of 8–10 hours per week) placed with community-based internship partners.
• A weekly 2-hour seminar focused on academic reflection, skill development, and leadership topics.
• Optional completion of the Civic Engagement minor to explore theory behind civic practice.
• Participation in cohort-based experiences across four years, including a first-year service trip, a sophomore exchange, a junior leadership experience, and a senior capstone thesis.
• Engagement with the program’s seven core commitments: Community Building, Social Justice, International Perspective, Spiritual Exploration, Diversity, Civic Engagement, and Wellness.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be eligible for Federal College Work-Study. To establish eligibility students must complete the FAFSA annually and consult the Office of Financial Aid if unsure. The application process requires verifying work-study eligibility, submitting short-answer responses to the program contact, and requesting an interview. College Work-Study is need-based and not guaranteed.

The program develops transferable leadership, partnership-building, project management and reflective practice skills useful across sectors. Students often leverage community placement relationships for internships or job leads; the program’s emphasis on sustained service and a senior capstone can strengthen applications for roles in nonprofit management, public service, education, social services, and other civic-facing careers.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Participation includes paid service hours through College Work-Study (students can earn pay for up to about 10 hours per week at community placements). Because eligibility depends on FAFSA and institutional financial-aid rules, prospective members should coordinate with the Financial Aid Office to confirm potential funding and work-study availability.
