A five-year blended pathway combining a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. Suited to students who want a research-informed grounding in language structure and acquisition plus practical training to teach and work with multilingual communities.

What you'll study

Coursework examines language structure, processes of language acquisition, and how language operates in social and cultural settings. The program builds from introductory linguistics through advanced seminars in applied linguistics and culminates in a capstone involving an independent research project. In the blended option, students take graduate-level TESOL courses while finishing their undergraduate requirements.

  • Language structure (phonology, syntax, morphology implied by description of structural study)
  • Language acquisition and mental processes involved in learning
  • Interaction of language with society and culture
  • Applied and research methods leading to an independent capstone project
  • Practical teaching experience via ENG 4410 internship at the Cal Poly Pomona English Language Institute (CPELI)
  • Optional summer study abroad teaching placement (Teaching Abroad in Thailand program at RMUTT) for classroom and intercultural experience
