What you'll study

Core emphases include analysis of historical and philosophical foundations of educational practice, adult learning and development, methods that maximize learner engagement, and relationships among education, leadership, scholarship and social activism. Students learn traditional and activist inquiry methods, data collection strategies from varied sources, and how to situate practitioner scholarship within relevant literature and debates. The program expects students to develop personal pedagogies, produce clear scholarly writing, and design interventions at individual, organizational and broader social levels.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a master’s degree (the master’s need not be in Education) and have a minimum of five years of professional experience, either before or after the master’s. Candidates should be able to envision themselves as education change agents in their professional settings.

Career prospects

Graduates leave prepared to function as scholar‑practitioners who design and evaluate educational practices for social change in schools, community organizations, and other professional contexts. The program supports work that addresses equity, ethics and social justice and positions alumni to lead inquiry‑based initiatives, develop pedagogical approaches, and inform policy or organizational change relevant to their specialization.

Scholarships & funding angle

The President’s Doctoral Fellowship is available to entering doctoral students: awards total $12,000, disbursed equally over the first two registered years. Eligibility requires a minimum prior GPA of 3.40, full‑time enrollment, satisfactory academic progress each term, and completion of all registered courses to continue receiving the award.
